What is SWADE NT?

Following on from the success of the SWADE program in Western Australia in 2018, ASCCA's WA Director Jennifer felt there was a tri-fold opportunity in taking SWADE’s delivery concept to the Northern Territory where new Network Partners expect be established and we can offer support to existing Network Partners, whilst working towards establishing (and re-establishing) ASCCA Computer Clubs in the Territory, offering older Territorians opportunities to connect in with ASCCA’s vast bank of knowledge and resources.

ASCCA is an organisation that ‘runs on of the smell of an oily rag’, and whilst there are many dedicated people volunteering their time, ASCCA identified that this sort of project requires funding to give it a chance to be adequately cultivated, hence SWADE NT has been enabled through a Capacity Building grant for the Be Connected project in the NT.

ASCCA Director and former Manager of Walpole Community Resource Centre, Jennifer Willcox (Jenny) has teamed with Natika Hawes-Wright (Tik) former Manager of Kununurra Community Resource Centre to form the driving force behind the SWADE NT Team.  Between them, these ladies have almost 40 years’ experience in community based and remote service delivery.  Natika, who is a self-confessed tech tragic has spent the last 17 years living in the Kimberley and is familiar with challenges related to remote service delivery, and Jenny’s passion for establishing and nurturing a love of learning new skills among older Aussies has the team perfectly suited to support digital literacy engagement and enhancement on a broad scale throughout the Northern Territory.  Over the last 20 years ASCCA has become a major catalyst to enthuse, encourage, empower and assist seniors to explore the satisfaction and advantages of using technology.
ASCCA’s SWADE NT team is offering support, assistance and encouragement to community groups and organisations throughout the Territory to become Be Connected Network Partners, giving them opportunities to access small grants to assist their organisations in supporting Seniors in their community on their digital literacy journey; whilst also offering opportunities for these NT organisations to tap into and/or share skills with other ASCCA groups and clubs to/from anywhere in Australia.

The program is primarily aimed at Seniors, but it is also open to those who may be disadvantaged by location, language, culture or health.  This opens up a very wide spectrum and will work on a similar model to that adopted in Western Australia. The distances between towns and the sheer remoteness of many communities isn’t a new challenge for Jennifer or Natika, having been the first Capacity Builders to tackle regional and remote West Australian communities in the SWADE project 2018 all from their home towns in regional / remote WA.
The SWADE NT team will remain located in regional Western Australia, they are proficient in delivering workshops and mentoring organisations through their supported Video Conference service provided by WA based BeingThere Video Conferencing.

This service plays a critical role in the success of the remote service delivery, supporting both the SWADE NT Team and existing and potential Network Partners in the delivery and receipt of workshops, support and mentoring via the high quality, professional video conferencing service.
Being There’s people are proficient at getting organisations and individuals set up, optimising their hardware and connections to ensure the best possible experience for all users.  They understand the challenges of remote communications due to having clients all over the world, including in remote and isolated Western Australian communities.

SWADE NT’s goal is to work with new and existing Be Connected Network Partners throughout the Territory in order to provide access to capacity building opportunities for their team, primarily via Video Conferencing sessions.  The team, including ASCCA President, Nan Bosler, will be on the road to showcase the support they are offering Territory organisations in March 2019 to help organisations be better placed to support their own community members in a variety of technological needs.

It is a concern that there are still many Aussies who are not confident participants in the digital age, seniors and CaLD communities are over-represented in this group, and this puts them at risk of digital and social isolation.

The initial focus for SWADE NT is to support organisations in accessing Be Connected Grant funds and establishing a support network for people wanting to become more confident and less fearful/frustrated by their technology, the long term aspiration is to establish new ASCCA Computer Clubs in the Territory, membership can support the ongoing aspiration of organisations to support their communities and assist older Australians to become knowledgeable, safe and active participants in the digital age.  By bridging the digital divide, we will hopefully encourage communities to inspire groups to continue learning and embracing technology and all the opportunities it can open up for a healthy, active and engaged ageing population.
